In his 17th try, Rory McIlroy has finally won the Masters, completing the career Grand Slam.

In what was his 11th attempt at completing the slam, becoming the sixth of all time and first to do so since Tiger Woods in 2000, McIlroy survived a subsequent one-hole playoff against Justin Rose to win his first green jacket.

It’s McIlroy’s third win of the year and all have come during what’s been somewhat of a wild gear year for the now five-time major champion.

It started at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, his season debut, when McIlroy switched from the TaylorMade TP5x, to the higher spinning and lower launching TP5.

“I sort of stumbled upon it,” McIlroy said Thursday at Pebble Beach. “I was messing around at the Grove the other day. This has got to be like Thursday last week. I just started to hit some chips with the TP5 instead of the TP5x, and I really loved how I felt. I hadn’t really tested the 2024 TP5, but I loved how it was reacting around the greens. And then I started hitting some like 60- and 70-yard shots with it, and it was coming off with a much lower launch, but spinier.”

McIlroy went on to win that week while continuing to use his TaylorMade Qi10 (DOT) driver from 2024 and didn’t try to switch into the newer Qi35 until a month and a half later at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

In Orlando, McIlroy made wholesale changes that involved adding a new driver, 3-wood, 5-wood and 3-iron, while weakening his pitching wedge and removing his gap wedge. Those changes saw McIlroy lose strokes off the tee during the third round at Bay Hill and he had his Qi10 woods ubered up to Orlando for the final round.

Those were the clubs he used to win the very next week at the Players Championship and this week at Augusta.

McIlroy also made a change to his TaylorMade MG4 lob wedge, weakening it to 61 degrees before the start of the season.

“Rory has played a MG4 60° LB wedge in the past and loved the transition and leading edge of that model,” TaylorMade VP of Tour Operations Keith Sbarbaro told GOLF earlier this year. “When he came up with the idea of going to a 61° wedge, this model with this shape, sole and leading edge worked best. Rory wants to stick with one wedge and this model was by far the most versatile. It doesn’t catch in the grain, and has low enough bounce to perform well on tight grass like at The Masters. It produces a lot of spin, including the incredible chip on 17 at the Ryder Cup he hit with a similar version. The 61° also makes hitting the 40-70 yard shots much easier. He can put more of a hit on it to get the lower launch and spin than he could at 59°.”

That was the wedge McIlroy used for the chip on the 2nd hole on Saturday, which he holed to take the lead for the first time in the tournament.

But perhaps McIlroy’s most clutch clubs were probably his TaylorMade Rors Proto irons, a variation of the P730 blade irons that McIlroy first started using when he signed with the company back in 2017. Time after time, McIlroy was able to hoist irons up either over trees or so high he could land them soft on Augusta’s increasingly firm greens throughout the week.

His approaches on 15, both Saturday and Sunday, and 17 during the final round peaked well over 120 feet, allowing him to hold the greens. He also found gaps on Nos. 5 and 7 during the final round that were so high that viewers at home couldn’t even see them.

Keep reading below for a full breakdown of McIlroy’s gear setup.

TaylorMade Milled Grind 4 Custom Wedge

Milled Grind 4 utilizes laser etched Spin Tread and a raw face to provide better bite around the greens and superior spin in wet conditions. Refined shaping creates a smooth aesthetic that inspires creativity around the greens, while improved mass distribution provides a solid feel. IMPROVED SPIN IN WET CONDITIONS Spin Tread technology utilizes laser etching to channel away moisture and help retain spin in wet conditions. The same way that tire treads help your car stay connected to the road, Spin Tread redirects water at impact and creates more friction between the club face and golf ball to impart more spin than prior generations. REFINED SHAPING MG4 features refinements in shape and visual appeal with a focus on what players perceive at address. Details from the hosel blend, offset and leading-edge straightness were all inspired by the insights and preferences of the best players and most experienced designers. Compared to the previous MG3, MG4 showcases a slightly larger footprint that provides players with a sense of roundness, smoothness and improved ease of use. RAW FACE & NEW FINISH There’s a reason raw wedges are preferred by the game’s best players. The unplated material will rust over time to preserve consistent spin while also delivering better performance in wet conditions. A new refined finish with a slightly darker tint minimizes glare and blends seamlessly with the raw face for a unified appearance.
