Min Woo Lee has finally broken through on the PGA Tour, owning the weekend at the Texas Children’s Houston Open to win his first PGA Tour title.

Lee won with a bag of mostly Callaway clubs, along with two Titleist Vokey wedges. The long-bombing Lee, who is second on the PGA Tour with an 188 mph average ball speed this season, fired his two lowest career rounds to date on the PGA Tour with Friday’s 64 and Saturday’s 63.

Perhaps more impressive about Lee’s game than his 190 mph driver ball speed is his 170+ mph ball speed with his Callaway X Forged UT ’21 driving iron. Lee didn’t need to use the long iron much around Memorial Park this week, but he used it on nearly half his tee shots two weeks ago at TPC Sawgrass, where he was the 36-hole co-leader.

Min Woo Lee says this club is his secret ‘weapon’ at TPC Sawgrass
By: Jack Hirsh

“I’m using that a lot and it’s a pretty good weapon of mine,” Lee said after the second round at the Players. “So I can kind of draw it and hit it straight and it goes a long way. When I hit it good it ends up going a long way. That helps. Then you have short clubs into holes, so I would love to hit 2-iron everywhere, but obviously you can’t.

“It’s just a variety of shots. I love how I can step up and hit that 2-iron, but there’s holes where you can hit driver and bomb it down there. So it’s cool.”

The rest of Lee’s irons are even more intriguing. After slotting in Callaway’s X Forged 4- and 5-irons, the remainder of Lee’s iron set are one-off Apex Prototypes for the 6-10-iron (10-iron is a pitching wedge).

Lee joins a growing number of pros who have one-off sets of irons. Callaway has also made a one-off set of irons for Akshay Bhatia, but Bhatia hasn’t put them in play yet.

“The new MB Protos have a slightly different sole profile and the footprint is slightly larger than our MBs in the past,” Callaway Tour Performance Rep Kellen Watson told GOLF. “Although we had success with the ’21 and ’24 models, our staff wanted something a bit more forgiving with more bounce. Muscle backs historically are lower launching and higher spinning. Our goal was to buck the narrative and provide better performance in a familiar, sleek design.

“Min was the perfect guy to test them with and after one test, he wouldn’t let us take ’em back.”

Lee debuted the prototype irons earlier this season at Pebble Beach. They feature simple cosmetic badging with just the Callaway “Chevron” logo on the bag muscle pad and “Apex Forged” engraved on the hosel. The sole on the irons seems to be a point of emphasis with three different grind angles and significant trail relief, presumably to help turf interaction.
