Think a club-fitting isn’t for you? Here’s why you are wrong

a player gets fit for golf clubs

Sure, you can always change your golf swing, but getting fit and finding the perfect clubs for you can immediately help your game.

True Spec Golf

One of the most common objections to getting fit for golf clubs is “I need to take lessons and dial my swing first.” Or maybe you’ll hear someone say, “My swing is so inconsistent, custom clubs won’t help me.” There’s also this one, “What happens if my swing changes? I don’t want to have to buy new clubs!”

Sure, valid questions, but that’s where expert fitters come in to help. If you can make solid contact but slice it 100 yards to the right of your target, would a driver that only goes 30 yards right help you play better golf? (Answer: yes.)

How your body moves and the tempo in which you swing the club is your swing DNA. Changing it is extremely difficult and takes thousands of hours of practice. Who has that kind of time? Major swing changes often require a professional instructor, a regular lesson schedule, supervised practice and still take thousands of hours before the change becomes the new normal on the golf course. Changing clubs is not only faster but also shows you immediate results.

Who wouldn’t want that instant gratification with their game?

Now, how do custom fit clubs change your game and help you shoot lower scores? I’m glad you asked! Think about it: we are results oriented in everything else we do in our lives. Playing golf is no exception. If your current clubs don’t fit you properly, you figure out how to make them work. Subconsciously, you will figure out what swing compensations you need to make in order to produce the results you want to see on the course. Maybe you hold the face off. Maybe you address the ball with the face closed to your target to prevent that nasty slice. Whatever it is, there is no magic wand that is going to fix the movements you naturally make during your swing. What custom fit clubs do is help reward a good shot while also managing the miss. Remember that aforementioned 100-yard slice? You can be fit for a driver that reduces your slice and simultaneously increases your distance.

Your fitter will also work with you to help prioritize your objectives as a player. Want more distance? Finding the correct shaft and head combination for how you swing the club has been proven to yield extra yards with every club in the bag. Need more control? A fitter can help you optimize your launch characteristics, spin, start direction and how your ball reacts at impact.

Sure, custom clubs might be more expensive than buying older used models, but golf equipment is getting more expensive every year, which is all the more reason to get fit and ensure that the investment you are making in your game is the right one. Brand-agnostic fitting companies, like True Spec Golf, will work with your budget and your needs as a player to find you something that will help you play your best golf.

Not ready to invest in a full bag of new clubs? That’s fine, too. The best part of custom fitting is the custom part. If you want to validate the results before you pony up for the full bag of clubs, True Spec will build you whatever you’d like to purchase to do your own testing. Start with a single club or build a few pieces to test on the course against your current gamers. When you see the results for yourself, you can order the rest of the set on the timeline that makes sense for you. You really don’t have anything to lose — other than strokes off your index.

Looking for a new shaft for 2025? Find a fitting location near you at True Spec Golf.
